Through Manteigas Municipality it’s possible, with a watchful eye, to find some archeological traces of the past, history marks that remain until today.
History Marks
According to the news on the ancient Manteigas newspaper, “Estrela da Beira”, nr 138, on 21st December 1935: at the place called Ribeiro do Urso, of the neighbour parish of Sameiro, were found, a few time ago, four roman millstones and a milestone which , by ignorance of its archaeologic value, were unused by their owner. Already at the beginning of the 18th century, according to Father Luís Abrantes de Almeida, were found near Fragal dos Mouros, other elements with a considerable archeologic value, also lost over the years. All this certifies the antiquity of the neighbour village.
In which concerns the archaeological information included in the Parish Memory of 1758, we notice the finding of a cock or dart, that separately will be less significant, since it could be taken there, but together with other findings it has some relevance. (Batista J. D. L., 2005)
Another archaeological finding indicated by José David Lucas Batista in “O Povoamento da Serra da Estrela de 1055 a 1223 e outros Estudos” is of a roman coin found in Manteigas. It’s a “denarius” still from the time of the roman republic, in silver, probably dating from about the year 112 B.C., that Manius Aemilius Lepidus ordered to coin. At the stamp an equestrian statue and the inscription Manio Aemilio Lepido.
